Hospitality Ulster said that Belfast “didn’t see images like they had in London,” so our decisions on opening up shouldn’t be based on them. Hospitality Ulster have urged the Northern Irish Executive to make a clear decision on the reopening of ‘wet-only’ pubs meaning indoor pubs which don’t serve food. It comes as hundreds of bars were allowed to open at the weekend in Northern Ireland, but bars who don’t serve food say they have been left in the dark over when they can reopen.
One bar manager from the Mid-Ulster area told Belfast Live that the lack of clarity amounted to “discrimination and inequality”, and pleaded for more action. If no date is to be forthcoming, I’d ask if they could please explain why.

Soldier lover! The British garrison, now numbering 14,, took over security in Northern Ireland when Catholics, demonstrating for social reform, feared a major pogrom at the hands of the Protestant majority. Today, Martha Doherty, who was to be married to a soldier on Friday, was seized in the Bogside area and cursed and spat upon before the tar and feathers were poured on her. Later freed, she is in seclusion with friends. The wedding date is in doubt.
It was the second incident in three days in which a young Catholic woman was punished for dating soldiers. She was warned that she would be shot or tarred and feathered the next time. Army officers concede privately that their links to the Catholic community are virtually severed. The Catholics also say the army has seized only Catholics.

The entries span the years from AD to AD Later entries up to AD were added by others. Entries up to the mid-6th century are retrospective, drawing on earlier annalistic and historical texts, while later entries were contemporary, based on recollection and oral history. Charles-Edwards has claimed that the main source for its records of the first millennium A. The Annals used the Irish language , with some entries in Latin.
Because the Annals copied its sources verbatim, they are useful not just for historians, but also for linguists studying the evolution of the Irish language. A century later, the Annals of Ulster became an important source for the authors of the Annals of the Four Masters.

Despite the reopening of hotels, restaurants, food-pubs and beer gardens at the beginning of July, a date for the reopening of wet-led pubs was previously withheld causing great concern and financial hardship for many business owners. The naming of a date has brought a sense of relief for many publicans, who will still find it tough to return to any form of profitability under the current social distancing guidelines. These pubs are at the heart of our local communities and have experienced significant financial difficulties since closure in March.
Confirmation of this reopening date will now allow these businesses to plan ahead and make sure they can get back to business in a safe way for both staff and customers alike. After months with no custom or income and a growing number of bills, the financial viability of many of these pubs is at risk and they will require ongoing support in the time ahead.
We know that with the current social distancing guidance, it is going to be very difficult for these businesses to return to profitability, but at least they now have an opportunity to save livelihoods and their businesses.

A team from Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Aberdeen also located residences of early kings of Ulster from the medieval period. Navan Fort in Co Armagh was, according to tradition, one of the great royal sites of pre-Christian Gaelic Ireland and capital of Ulaidh. In addition to identifying the residences of early medieval kings, activity at Navan Fort is contemporary with the foundation of nearby Armagh City by St Patrick.
Researchers measured the magnetic properties of the soil, which allowed them to map “buried archaeology” for which there is no above ground trace. The survey gives a strong indication of the footprint and size of buildings that once stood on the site. The results show a vast temple complex and ceremonial centre of prehistoric Europe, as well as the first evidence of continued medieval activity during the period when Navan Fort was associated with the kingship of Ulster.
Dr John O’Keeffe, Principal Inspector of Historic Monuments in the Department for Communities, said the work “has shone new light on the monument, and will inform further research as we explore what Navan Fort meant to our forebears and how they used the site, for years to come”.
